Another option that scientists have been exploring is finding a closer Earth-like planet. In August of 2016, astronomers from the European Southern Observatory announced the existence of an exoplanet orbiting in the habitable zone of the red dwarf star Proxima Centauri. This planet, named Proxima Centauri B or B, has an orbital period of approximately 11.2 Earth Days. Its estimated mass is at least 1.3 times that of the Earth. Since it is located about 4.2 light-years from Earth, it is the closest known exoplanet in the Solar System.
