The Little Mermaid had always been silent and thoughtful. Now, she was more so than ever. When she knew where the young prince lived, she spent many nights on the water near the palace. She grew more and more fond of human beings. She wished more to be able to wander about with them. One day, she asked her grandmother: “If human beings are not drowned, can they live forever? Do they never die as we do here in the sea?"
