Whether we are consciously listening or not, we are perpetually exposed to sound. From the moment we wake up in the morning until we fall asleep at night, we hear dogs barking, birds singing, and the noise of traffic in the street. Although we can close our eyes, we can't close our ears. Perhaps that explains why newborns cry with their first breath.
