In 1920, the Czech writer and playwright Karel Čapek premiered his dystopian play R.U.R. The play tells the story of a factory that produces artificial creatures out of synthetic matter to perform tasks that humans simply don't want to do.
Čapek's brother suggested calling these creatures "roboti," which derives from the Czech word "robota," or "forced labor."
