At the end of the 19th century, New Orleans was a major entertainment center; the city fostered a vibrant music scene. Musicians from different cultures and races gathered in Storyville, the red-light district of New Orleans, where black and white musicians played together and experimented with music styles. Many early jazz musicians performed at bars in Storyville.
