The word "Hanukkah" means "dedication." During the second century BC, King Antiochus tried to abolish Judaism and occupied the holy temple. Hanukkah celebrates the reclamation of the holy temple. Despite having a smaller army, the Jewish Maccabees defeated the king's men.
