Lorelai Gilmore from the American show “Gilmore Girls” once said that “If eating cake is wrong, I don’t want to be right.” And I totally agree with her. Cake is this special food group that could never do you wrong. Feeling blue? Have a slice of cake and you will feel better.
The word "cake" has its roots in the Old Norse word "kaka.” Modern cakes familiar to us today were first made in Europe around the middle of the 17th century, evolving further in the 19th century with the discovery of baking powder and the rise of buttercream frosting.
Mexico: Tres Leches
Tres Leches ("three milks") is a fluffy sponge cake soaked in evaporated milk, condensed milk, and heavy cream. Served cold with whipped cream, it's a staple in Mexico and across Latin America.
Indonesia: Kue Putu
A popular Indonesian street snack made with rice flour and filled with palm sugar. It is traditionally steamed in bamboo tubes and topped with fresh coconut.
Slovenia: Kremna Rezina
Also known as Bled Cream Cake, this masterpiece consists of puff pastry, egg custard, and whipped cream. It's famous for being prepared according to the "rule of seven": folded seven times and custard cooked for seven minutes.
Germany: Käsekuchen
This German-style cheesecake uses Quark cheese instead of cream cheese, making it lighter and fluffier. It often features a hint of lemon and a shortcrust pastry base.
Australia & New Zealand: Pavlova
Named after ballerina Anna Pavlova, this meringue-based dessert has a crisp crust and soft, marshmallow-like center. It’s always topped with whipped cream and fresh seasonal fruit.
Jamaica: Hummingbird Cake
A tropical delight featuring banana, pineapple, and pecans. Though popular in the US South, it originated in Jamaica and was named after the island's national bird, the Doctor Bird.
