Calling someone a pet name is like saying a magic spell—an affectionate magic spell that represents closeness. One reason is probably because this specific spell is strictly limited to the people you already know and share affection with. After all, you don’t really say this to strangers. Or do you?

In Turkish, pet names are extra special because they are almost always used with the possessive determiner “my.” When you address someone, you are saying “my darling” or “my soul,” not just the label itself. It’s romantic, cheesy, and enough to make you swoon. Perhaps I’ve just had enough of the Bridgerton romantic madness, but I find this incredibly charming.
