The Greeks introduced us to culture in the form of yogurt or yoghurt, whichever spelling you prefer. The Greeks also introduced us to the mighty and powerful Greek figures, gods, and goddesses. These mythical figures are known to be very spiteful, passionate, crazy. And their epic, adventurous stories and legends taught the world important morals and life lessons like courage, family, love, life, friendship, loyalty and more.

But who are these Greek mythological mythical creatures? Do we know them? Have we heard of them? What do we think about them? Well, if you have seen Percy Jackson and the Olympians on Disney or even read the series by Rick Riordan, then yes you have heard of some of the names of these beings. If you’ve seen the musical Hadestown or heard of some of its songs, then yes you have heard of some of the names of these beings. But if you are still not sure of who they are, worry not because here’s a little list to help you.

  • Athena: Ἀθηνᾶ
    Olympian goddess; goddess of war and wisdom
  • Hades: ᾍδης
    God of the dead and riches, king of the underworld
  • Demeter: Δημήτηρ
    Olympian goddess; goddess of the harvest and agriculture
  • Gaia: Γαῖα
    Primordial deity; mother of the Titans, Mother Earth
  • Phoebe: Φοίβη
    Titaness; goddess of intellect and prophecy, goddess of the Oracle of Delphi
  • Themis: Θέμις
    Titaness; goddess of justice, divine order, and law
  • Selene: Σελήνη
    Titaness; goddess of the moon
  • Helios: Ἥλιος
    Titan; guardian of oaths, god of the sun and sight
  • Nesoi: Νῆσοι
    Primordial deity; the goddesses of islands
  • Themis: Θέμις
    Titaness; goddess of justice, divine law, and custom
  • Uranus: Οὐρανός
    Primordial deity; father of the Titans, god of the heavens
  • Hephaestus: Ἥφαιστος

    Olympian goddess; goddess of wilderness, the Moon, nature, vegetation, childbirth, chastity, care of children, and the hunt
  • Apollo: Ἀπόλλων
    Olympian god; son of Zeus and Leto, god of music, the arts, archery, dance, the Sun and the light, healing, diseases
  • Pontus: Πόντος
    Primordial deity; god of the sea, father of sea creatures
  • Aphrodite: Ἀφροδίτη
    Olympian goddess; goddess of love, lust, beauty, desire, pleasure, sex, fertility, and victory
  • Ares: Ἄρης
    Olympian god; son of Zeus and Hera, god of war and courage
