A celebration always calls for a unique expression of joy whether it be dancing, singing, clapping or, in many cultures, a piercingly loud ululation. And, no, that is not weird at all. After all, we have our different and special cultural ways of celebrating. So, you should never be afraid to celebrate those one-of-a-kind, memorable moments exactly how you want to.

But, let’s go back to this ululation… have you ever heard of it? If you haven't, don't worry; you're about to learn why it's so special.

Ululation is practiced in a lot of cultures around the world. In Arab countries, specifically across the Middle East and North Africa, this is known as a Zaghrouta (زغروتة). This is pronounced as zuh-groo-tuh. It is a distinct, high-pitched trill heard at weddings, parties, graduations, and many other celebratory occasions. Interestingly, it is also sometimes used at funerals to express profound waves of grief and honor for the deceased.

What is a Zaghrouta

Technically, if you hear one, it’s a Zaghrouta. If you hear a chorus of them, they are called Zaghreet (زغاريت). This is a skill primarily practiced by women. It involves a rapid, side-to-side movement of the tongue, creating a vibrating trill in the back of the throat. It's an incredible art form that dates back to the pre-Islamic era. Historically, it was used by women to cheer on warriors or to signal for help across long distances. But today, it’s purely about the heart, joy, and the beauty of life.

The Meaning Behind the Sound

While a Zaghrouta can express deep sadness in the context of a funeral, it is most commonly the "soundtrack of happiness." When you hear that loud, ringing lelele trill you know you are witnessing a beautiful, life-changing moment. It is a way of saying, this-moment-is-so-big-words-aren't-enough-to-describe-it. So if you hear this sound, share in the joy and fun and celebration with those around you. After all, some moments are too special to keep quiet ;)

How loud can you "lololololo"💃
