“Ghostbusters” and Other Ghastly Movies To Learn A New Language

Spooky season is here and that means spooky movies are playing left and right for leisure and for learning. Confused after reading the “for learning” part? Don’t be, because you may not know it, but watching movies is a fun way to learn new things like a new culture and language.

Think about it, movies contain visual cultural nuances and natural expressions that keep you highly entertained and engaged for hours. And let’s face it, you’ll learn a new point of view about life, cinema, and its in-betweens. What more can you ask for?

Spanish: Macario

Macario is a supernatural drama movie based on the same-name novel written by B. Traven that takes place in modern-day Mexico. The movie was the first Mexican movie nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

In the film, a poor man named Macario sacrifices half of his succulent turkey to Death in the hopes that it may prevent his death. As a token of his goodwill, Death gives Macario healing water that will only work at Death's choosing.

Spanish: Hasta el viento tiene miedo

Hasta el viento tiene, aka Even the Wind is Afraid or The Wind is Afraid in English, is a gothic supernatural horror film. The movie is revered as a cult classic in Mexico and is credited with establishing the Mexican horror genre.

In the film, several female college students are stranded together over the Christmas break. But then something happens, and they start to experience the ghost of a dead girl haunting them.

Spanish: Tesis

Alejandro Amenábar, a Spanish filmmaker, made his feature film debut with Tesis while he was still a student at Madrid's Complutense University. Tesis won 7 Goya Awards in 1996 including those for Best Film, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Director.

University student Angela intends to do a thesis on the themes of audiovisual violence and the family. But, one time she witnessed a man commit suicide while he was on the train. As a result, her train was evacuated. As she was being escorted outside, Ángela chose to check the man's remains out of curiosity.

French: Le Manoir

Le Manoir or The Mansion is a French horror comedy, directed by Tony T. Datis. The film has a 4.6 IMDb rating and a Tomatometer score of 61% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The plot centers on a group of students who want to ring in the New Year in an old mansion outside of the city. But as soon as they got there, strange and scary things began to happen.

French: Baxter

The French horror film Baxter was based on the Ken Greenhall novel Hell Hound. The title character is a vicious white bull terrier who is searching for his rightful owner.

An elderly woman was given a white bull terrier named Baxter by her daughter. But as time goes on, Baxter turns violent in an effort to find a new family to adopt him.

Italian: Inferno

The sequel to Dario Argento's Three Mothers trilogy is the supernatural horror film Inferno from Italy. Kim Newman calls the picture "the most underrated horror film of the 1980s," and Total Film magazine named it one of the top 50 horror movies ever made in 2005.

Inferno is about the story of a young man who looks into the disappearance of his sister when she was living in New York, which also happened to be the residence of a very dangerous, centuries-old witch.

Italian: Phenomena

Phenomena is another horror movie directed by Dario Argento. After the movie's release in Italy, New Line Cinema bought it and changed the title to Creepers, after cutting more than 20 minutes from the original runtime.

The story centers on a young girl who discovers she has the ability to communicate with insects while attending a Swiss boarding school. She uses her abilities to track out a serial murderer who is killing young students at and near the school.

English: Coraline

Coraline is a stop-motion animated fantasy horror film. The animation received positive reviews and it earned $16.85 million on its opening weekend. Coraline won the ANNIE Awards for Best Music in Animated Feature Production, Best Character Design in Animated Feature Production, and Best Production Design in an Animated Feature Production. Additionally, it was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and a Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature Film.

An 11-year-old girl named Coraline discovers a parallel universe that is a weirdly perfect copy of her messy life. However, this world has dangerous mysteries that want to keep her away from her true home.

English: Little Shop of Horrors

Frank Oz directed Little Shop of Horrors, a cult-classic horror comedy musical film. The movie is an adaptation of an off-broadway musical made by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, which was also an adaptation of Roger Corman’s The Little Shop of Horrors.

The story revolves around Seymour, a nerdy flower shop assistant who finds success in love with the help of a massive human-eating plant that is insatiably hungry.

English: Ghostbusters

Ghostbusters is an American supernatural comedy Halloween classic. The movie became the second-highest-grossing film of 1984 in the US and Canada and was the number one film for seven consecutive weeks. Ghostbusters was selected by the Library of Congress in 2015 to be conserved in the National Film Registry.

In the movie, three scientists who investigated the supernatural world were fired from their jobs. As a result, the trio decided to open a business where they can capture annoying ghosts, spirits, and poltergeists.

German: Der Bunker

Nikias Chryssos makes his directorial debut with the feature film Der Bunker or The Bunker. The film made its premiere at the 2015 Berlin International Film Festival, and in December of that same year, it was released in select theaters, on DVD, Blu-ray, and Video on demand.

A nameless young student seeks privacy so he may concentrate on his essential tasks, but he ends up teaching a kid whose parents homeschool him in a remote bunker fortress.

German: Funny Games

The psychological thriller Funny Games (1997) was remade in 2007, and the cast was largely American and English-speaking. Both versions of the movie were written and directed by Michael Haneke.

In the film, the two unstable young guys use cruel and sadistic pranks to hold a family captive at their gorgeous vacation home on a lake.

Korean: The Wailing

The Wailing, a popular horror film from South Korea, has a 99% approval rating and an 8/10 average rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In numerous award-body organizations, the film has received nominations in several categories, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best International Film, to name a few.

As soon as a Japanese man sets foot in a small village, an unexplained ailment begins to spread. The villagers are turning violent and killing their families as a result of this virus.

Korean: A Tale of Two Sisters

A Tale of Two Sisters is a Korean psychological horror film that is based on the Janghwa Hongryeon jeon, a Joseon Dynasty folktale. It is the highest-grossing South Korean horror film and the first South Korean film to be shown in American theaters. The film received Best Picture at the 2004 Fantasporto Film Festival.

After spending some time in a mental hospital, Su-mi is reunited with her sister. The sisters return to their country home with their widowed father and new stepmother, only to discover the horrifying events haunting their home are all connected to a disturbing family history.
