It takes time and determination to improve your Spanish fluency, but that doesn't mean you should stick to one method of learning and give up when things get tough. Learning a new language takes time, so have fun while you're at it!

One way you could immerse yourself and improve your fluency in Spanish is by watching shows. With this method, you can improve your listening skills at the same time learn how different phrases are used. Not only that but your ears will be exposed to the differences in Spanish accents because there is no such thing as one Spanish accent.

Quick tip: you can try watching the show without subtitles. But, if you’re having difficulty understanding the dialogue, just add the subtitles and read the lines along!


La Casa de las Flores (The House of Flowers)

If you like dark comedy-drama series, check out La Casa de las Flores (The House of Flowers). The story follows the De la Mora family, an upper-class Mexican family, as they attempt to maintain and protect their reputation despite their father’s dirty secrets coming to light.

The show has been described as part of the “millennial telenovela” or “modern telenovela.” The series also talks about politics and it raises awareness of social issues like homophobia and transphobia.

La Casa de las Flores received a positive response all over the world, especially in non-Spanish-speaking countries. The Manchester Evening News also praised the show as a great way to learn and practice Spanish with.

Paulina De la Mora, a lead character played by actress Cecilia Suárez, gained popularity due to her interesting speech pattern. The #PaulinaDeLaMoraChallenge was trending on social media where fans of the show imitated her slow and special way of speaking. A petition to include Paulina’s voice was even submitted to the GPS app Waze.


Valeria

Valeria is a Spanish comedy-drama series. The show is based on a four-part book series by Elisabet Benavent called “En los zapatos de Valeria.” The plot follows a writer named Valeria as she navigates her life as a married woman, along with her group of friends in Madrid. The title character is played by Spanish actress Diana Gomez.

There are currently 2 seasons available to stream with 8 episodes per season; each episode lasts about 45 minutes. Recently, Netflix España confirmed the renewal of the series for a third and final season. So far, there is no specific date for the upcoming season but it is expected to premiere later this year.


Money Heist

Money Heist or La Casa de Papel (The House of Paper) is a crime drama series. If you appreciate an intriguing and thrilling show, then you’re in for a treat. Money Heist is a story about a group of eight robbers recruited by “The Professor” who attempt to pull off the biggest heist in the Royal Mint of Spain that is worth 2.4 billion Euros. Originally, the thriller was supposed to be a two-part limited series, but after Netflix purchased the streaming rights in 2017, it was renewed for another four seasons. The last installment premiered in December 2021.

Narcos is a crime drama series set and filmed in Colombia. The series is based on a true story about the drug kingpin, Pablo Escobar. Escobar became a billionaire through the production and distribution of drugs.

Narcos is a three-season drama with a total of 30 episodes. And each season focuses on a different episode in Escobar's life. Season 1 followed Escobar’s introduction into the Colombian drug trade. Season 2 showed Escobar's deception tactics and techniques for evading the authorities. Season 3 depicted how Escobar’s death led to the emergence of a more thriving cartel industry, with marketplaces sprouting up all over the world.

The drama series earned several nominations from different international award shows. It received three Primetime Emmy Award nominations, two Golden Globe nominations, and a BAFTA nomination for Best International Program. Narcos also took home awards for Best Drama Series, Best Actor in an International Production, and Best Music Supervision for Television Drama.


The Cook of Castamar

The Cook of Castamar or La cocinera de Castamar is a Spanish period drama series. The show is based on the novel by Fernando J. Muñez that was published in 2019. The story is set in 1720 Madrid, following a forbidden love story between a cook and a widowed duke.

The 12-episode period drama aired from February 2021 until May 2021. The book adaptation series was nominated for the 23rd Iris Awards for four categories in Best Fiction, Best Production, Best Actress, and Best Actor.


All For Love

Country of Origin: Colombia

The rom-com All For Love or Amar y vivir on Netflix is a remake of a beloved Colombian telenovela that aired in the late 1980s. The show follows the love story of a singer named Milagroso and a mechanic named Joacquin. The series is full of twists and turns and funny moments, especially as the lovers get involved in a series of organized crimes.

The show landed at number one on its final episode on April 14th, and the surprising ending left fans with mixed emotions. In response to the show's conclusion, fans shared emotional memes and gifs on social media with the hashtag #AmarYVivir. As of now, Netflix has yet to announce the confirmation for the telenovela's renewal for season two.
