“Bawang Putih” & More Vegetables In Indonesian

This Indonesian dish is a medley of veggie goodness, loaded with eggs and tofu and other more ingredients depending on its variation. It even has peanut sauce on the side. Or if you want the peanut sauce drizzled right away, that works too. This type of salad is called “Gado-Gado,” and it is also one of the five national dishes of Indonesia.

Gado-Gado is definitely not your typical salad. Like other salads, we’re talking about the vegetable salad department here, it has several veggie ingredients. The vegetable ingredients sometimes vary depending on the Gado-Gado variation. And these vegetables are typically blanched or lightly boiled.

Some versions even add noodles to the mix, coconut milk, cashew nuts, and shrimp paste. Prawn crackers are optional, but I would suggest having some on the side for extra crunch and taste. Besides, you can use the prawn crackers to scoop a delicious Gado-Gado bite. However, if you really don’t want any prawn crackers, that’s okay. You can just have extra serving of veggies and eggs and tofu and more that you want.

  • garlic: bawang putih (bah-wang puoo-tee)
  • carrot: wortel (wor-tel)
  • potato: kentang (kehn-tang)
  • lettuce: selada (seh-lah-dah)
  • celery: seledri (seh-leh-dree)
  • radish: lobak (loh-bahk)
  • asparagus: asparagus (ah-spah-rah-goos)
  • broccoli: brokoli (broh-koh-lee)
  • tomato: tomat (toh-maht)
  • spinach: bayam (bah-yam), kangkung (kang-koong)
  • pumpkin: labu (la-boo)
  • cucumber: timun (tee-mun)
  • potato: kentang (ken-tang)
  • sweet potato: ubi jalar (oo-bee ja-lar)
