Unlike light, sound travels well through water. In fact, sound travels four times faster when traveling through water than it does traveling through the air. Sound travels even faster in solids like stone, iron, and steel.
Sound travels at 335 meters (1,100 feet) per second in the air. Its speed depends on the density of the medium through which it travels.
